The most famous RAF heavy bomber of World War II was the Avro Lancaster, which went into service in 1942. Over 7,300 were built for RAF Bomber Command. One of the main targets of the RAF was to destroy the dams that supplied the Ruhr valley, the most important industrial area, with electric power. In order to make effective strikes on strong targets such as dams or barrages, a spinning dam-busting bomb better known as the "bouncing bomb" was developed. A new unit was set up especially for this attack, 617 Squadron, under the command of Wing Commander Guy Gibson. This attack with 19 Lancaster bombers took place on the night of 16/17 May 1943 under the code name "Operation Chastise".
