The Quintessential Super Car. Lamborghini unveiled the Countach at the 1971 Geneva Motor Show, and the car immediately caused a sensation with its radical wedge-shaped, futuristic styling. It also had a unique mid-engine configuration with the 5.0 liter V12 engine mounted longitudinally, but in reverse. Designed by Marcello Gandini, chief designer at Carrozzeria Bertone, the LP400 features large side NACA ducts, integrated shoulder air scoops, and louvers on the rear fenders, giving the car an aggressive appearance. Its LP400 designation refers to the 4.0 liter (3,929cc), 375hp V12 engine that is mounted in "Longitudinale Posteriore," or literally "longitudinal rear" position. The engine's output shaft is at the front and sends power forward to the gearbox, which then transfers it to the rear wheels via a drive shaft running back beneath the engine. This layout enables better weight distribution and was also adopted by later Lamborghini super cars like the Diablo and Murcielago. By replacing conventional practicality with a focus on pure speed and mechanical innovation, the Lamborghini Countach LP400 gained fame for its originality and is still much-adored by car enthusiasts all over the world.
